The Northwoods are experiencing dramatic change, and many northern tree species are dying. Within 50 years, without any intervention, researchers predict that the landscape in northeastern Minnesota will become mostly open grasslands. The Forest Assisted Migration Project (FAMP) is attempting to address these challenges to re-establish a resilient northern forest and bolster the regional economy.

Dr. Maurer-Jones will share her research into better understanding the fate of plastics in the environment using Lake Superior as her lab. The research includes quantifying the amount of micro and nano plastics in Lake Superior as well as how the chemistry of the plastic has changed and its potential impacts on ecosystems. Laura Mullen will talk about the real-world implications of pollution on a local business that depends on clean water.

Environmentalism and sustainability have a history of being movements of white, male, able-bodied, straight, middle-class voices, leaving out those most impacted by environmental degradation and extraction. In this talk, we will discuss how that narrative is shifting to center the voices of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color as well as women in the U.S. and across the world. We will also talk about how you can center justice and equity in your everyday life to advance the good of all.

Green New Deal Homes (affordable, solar-powered, net-zero energy) are at the core of this approach.
